When Birte pulled up to the house, Randy was raking leaves from last winter, and Jaxx was asleep in a vibrating pod. He stood in front of the baby, she assumed, in case Birte was planning on driving onto the lawn and through the front door.

“How was the spa?”

“It was nice, thank you.”

Leaves were assembled in piles throughout the yard.

“It’s a work in progress.” Randy leaned on the rake and pointed at Jaxx. “He only just fell asleep.”

“But, you had a good day though?” June sat on the front step next to a travel mug.

“We did,” Randy said. “We fed the birds, and went for a walk and dropped in on the Dekkers.” He bent down, nearly toppling over, and took a sip from the travel mug. “And, I got a custom order for a table. Client wants it before the end of next week. Jaxx and I already picked up the wood.”

June interrupted. “I saw Marissa at Chili’s.”

“Our Marissa?” Randy pulled an orange yard bag out of his vest pocket.

“Marissa, Marissa,” she said. “She was feeding chips to some steroids man.”

“Why would she do that?” Randy scooped up handfuls of leaves. “Maybe they’re just friends.”

“Not likely.” June took the garbage bag from Randy and followed him around the yard. He smelled like rum.

Randy picked up more leaves. “What did Birte have to say?”

“Nothing. Are you drinking?” She stared at the travel mug.

“It’s the rum from the baby shower.” He burped. “Tastes a bit like candy. And hot sauce.”

“Should you be drinking when you’re looking after Jaxx?”

“I’ve only had one glass.”

Was he drinking it straight? “Birte mentioned you told them about Fergus.”

He raised his hand as if asking permission to speak. “I did, but only because I remembered they went to a dental office run by brothers.” He tripped over a rake. “Not the right one though. No Glenda working there.” Randy stopped stuffing leaves and lifted Jaxx out of his pod and onto his shoulder.

“Let me take him,” June said. “Have you heard from Derek?”

“He checked in a couple of times.”

Randy handed her the baby. They went inside, and June placed Jaxx on a blanket inside the turtle sandbox.

Randy touched his stomach. “I need to eat.”

Why don’t you have some rum cake, she thought. They both went to the kitchen, where Vanessa was at the table eating a bowl of cereal, still in her pyjamas. Milk dripped down her chin.

“Good morning,” June said, though it was afternoon.

Vanessa raised her eyebrows in acknowledgement. A silver laptop sat open beside her. “Check it out,” she said, turning the screen toward Randy, who was eating a white bun. “Found an Aaron Frevola born January 18, 1982, at Foothills Hospital searching for his birth parents, and a Mark Joseph Harnish born February 14, 1982.”

“No,” Randy shook his head. “Fergus was born on April 11.”

June glanced around the kitchen for the rum. They didn’t have a designated liquor cabinet. Most of the alcohol in the house belonged to the kids and it was usually beer, stored in the fridge.
